Modelling ourselves: what the free energy principle reveals about our implicit notions of representation

چکیده

Abstract Predictive processing theories are increasingly popular in philosophy of mind; such process often gain support from the Free Energy Principle (FEP)—a normative principle for adaptive self-organized systems. Yet there is a current and much discussed debate about conflicting philosophical interpretations FEP, e.g., representational versus non-representational. Here we argue that these different depend on implicit assumptions what qualifies (or fails to qualify) as representational. We deploy (FEP) instrumentally distinguish four main notions representation, which focus organizational, structural, content-related functional aspects, respectively. The various ways aspects matter arriving at or non-representational discussed. also discuss how may be seen unified view where terms traditionally belong ontologies—e.g., model expectation autopoiesis synchronization—can harmonized. Our Genes , Ourselves ?

Is he right? We in the United States seem to be of two minds. Most of us have an intuition that, although our genes provide advantages and constraints, we retain great control over our lives. But we are developing a second, competing intuition that, like it or not, our genes determine our abilities, our preferences, and our emotions. Perhaps this second intuition is what induced Rutgers Univers...

What is implicit about implicit self-esteem?

Modern advances in implicit social cognition enabled development of novel methods for examining less conscious aspects of self-worth. The use of such ‘‘implicit” measures of self-esteem is based on the premise that because they circumvent direct self-reports, they must capture more implicit, automatic components of self-evaluation. Whether self-evaluations captured via ‘‘implicit” measures actu...

Science is perception: what can our sense of smell tell us about ourselves and the world around us?

Human sensory processes are well understood: hearing, seeing, perhaps even tasting and touch--but we do not understand smell--the elusive sense. That is, for the others we know what stimuli causes what response, and why and how. These fundamental questions are not answered within the sphere of smell science; we do not know what it is about a molecule that ... smells. I report, here, the status ...
